Anwyl Katharine Wargo, affectionately known as “Onnie,” 82, passed away Saturday morning, April 18, 2026, at her home cradled in the loving arms of her husband, Joseph P. Wargo (LtCol USAF, Ret). Onnie was born November 27, 1943, in Huntsville, TX, to Aylwyn P. Williams (MajGen PAARNG, Ret) and Katharine D. Williams, and raised in Havertown, PA where she graduated High School.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Aylwyn D. Williams (Col USA, Ret) and wife Babette; and brother Dafydd D. Williams and wife Kay. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her sister, Margred Corson and husband David of Flourtown, PA; and three sons: John P. Wargo and wife Suzi of Mulberry, FL; Dr. Andrew J. Wargo (Col USA, Ret) and wife Cordie and grandchildren Anna, Joshua, Honida, Birtie, and Alik Wargo of Harlem, GA; and Steven M. Wargo and wife Tricia Miller of Boise, ID; and grandchildren Jonathan Wargo, Kathryn Wargo (James) Throckmorton, Aaron Montierth, Oliver Grubb, Megan Miller, and Ethan Miller. She is also survived by three great grandchildren: Liam, Athena, and Micah.
Onnie attended Pennsylvania State University, majoring in English and Education. There she and Joe met and fell into a deep and everlasting love. They married on June 2, 1965, in Trinity Lutheran Church of Manoa, Havertown, PA.
Onnie was faithful to her God and served congregations in various capacities. She was skilled at organizing and tracking everything. As Joe’s military career evolved, she served as secretary and administrative assistant to churches in Bellevue, NE; Enon, OH; Oscoda, MI; and Belleville (Crossroads Christian) and O’Fallon (Faith Lutheran), IL. She was a secretary in the law firm of Carr, Korein, et al in East St Louis for a time. In Germany, she served as secretary to the DOD School at Ramstein AB where she and Joe also helped a Lutheran congregation thrive. At Faith Lutheran Church in O’Fallon, Onnie served as Altar Guild Member and Coordinator, Eucharist Minister/Coordinator, Worship and Music Board member, and Stephen Minister/Coordinator. She assisted in establishing and teaching in the church’s Kid’s Day Out Program.
Proud of her Welsh-French descent and Daughter of the American Revolution heritage, Onnie loved to sing and make music and was a member of Faith Lutheran’s vocal and bell choirs as well as the MetroEast Community Chorale. She had great love, generous spirit, and ready smile for all people and loved to laugh along with them.
In her spare time, Onnie enjoyed crafting: macrame, decoupage, counted cross-stitch, and of late, making greeting cards for birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and other personally significant events in peoples’ lives. Somehow, she also found time to teach Lamaze childbirth techniques to a few expectant parents. She is being deeply missed by many.
A celebration of Onnie’s life is planned for Monday, May 11, 2026 at Faith Lutheran Church, 520 E. US Highway 50, O’Fallon, IL, at 11:00 AM with visitation beginning at 9:30 AM. A lunch meal will follow the service. Pastor Candice Wassell is officiating. Wolfersberger Funeral Home of O’Fallon is serving the family. In lieu of flowers, donations to Faith Lutheran’s Music Fund or the charity of the donor’s choice are suggested.
