Brian Wilson, devoted husband, father, grandfather, firefighter, US Air Force veteran, and steadfast advocate for those living with ALS, passed away August 16, 2026 at home, in Edwardsville, Ill., after a courageous battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Born January 6, 1963 in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Brian dedicated the majority of his life to serving his country and community. He first served as a firefighter, running toward danger to protect others without hesitation. He then answered a higher calling by serving 24 years in the United States Air Force as a KC-135 tanker pilot, supporting major coalition and combat operations around the world. His leadership in the cockpit ensured countless missions were completed safely and successfully. Following his flying career, Brian continued serving an additional 13 years as a military strategist and lead contingency planner, including service at Scott Air Force Base. In this role, he safeguarded American forces by preparing for emerging threats and global contingencies, demonstrating the same foresight and dedication that defined his flying years.

Throughout his career, Brian exemplified integrity, courage, and unwavering commitment to duty. He earned the respect of fellow airmen, commanders, and coalition partners alike. His service spanned decades of military operations and international deployments, and his leadership left a lasting mark on those who served beside him.

In college Brian married the love of his life, Terri. Together they built a family grounded in faith, service, and resilience. He was the proud father of two sons, Erik and Jon, and later welcomed daughters-in-law and a granddaughter who brought immeasurable joy to his life.

Even after receiving his ALS diagnosis, Brian continued to serve, this time as a national advocate for research funding, treatment access, and federal accountability. Though the disease weakened his body, it never diminished his resolve. He fought for others with the same determination that marked his military career. Brian’s life was defined by service before self. Whether in uniform, in a firehouse, at a planning table, or behind a backyard smoker gathering family and friends, he led with strength and humility.

He is survived by his wife Terri, sons Erik (Kelsey) and Jon (Rachel); grandbaby Penelope; siblings Robert (Connie) Wilson, Bruce (Veronica) Wilson, and Bonnie (Erik) Freymuth and their families, extended relatives, fellow veterans, and a grateful community.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to I AM ALS at iamals.org/give or to Paralyzed Veterans of America – two organizations that became an integral part of Brian’s life. One may view a photo tribute, sign the guest book or message the family at www.wfh-ofallon.com.
