Charles E. Smith, age 83, of O'Fallon, passed away Thursday morning, February 2, 2006 at his home.
He was born to Harold and Florene Marie (nee Ratliff) Smith on January 31, 1923 in Hannibal, Mo. Mr. Smith served in the US Army Air Force during WWII, then worked for Missouri Department of Transportation. He was employed as a Postal Clerk in O'Fallon, Ill., retiring in 1981. Charlie was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Yesterday's Kids and the Senior Citizen's Club of O'Fallon, and former member of the Moose Lodge.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Clementine Marie (nee Gaido) Smith, whom he married November 7, 1967; 10 children, Linda Sue (Gene) Bock of LaGrange, Mo., Donna White of Ewing, Mo., Barbara (Tim) Peters of Montana, Charles Michael (Sue) Smith of Ewing, Mo., Sandy (Ted) Wemhoener of Quincy, Ill., David Joseph Smith of Taylor, Mo., Teresa Graebe of Florida, Linda Kay (Mark) Morse of O'Fallon, Gerald (Ruth) Waeltz of Lebanon, Ill., Richard Waeltz of O'Fallon; 37 Grandchildren and 33 Great Grandchildren, and sister Rosemarie Smith of St. Charles, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, one brother and grandchildren McKenzie Leeann White and Alexander Case Graebe.
Visitation will be 4-8 pm Friday, February 3, 2006 at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, O'Fallon. The Senior Citizens Club of O'Fallon will conduct a walk-through at 6:30 pm.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Saturday, February 4, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church with Rev. Elmar Mauer, OMI presiding. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in O'Fallon Township. Memorial Donations may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois.
