Clara Rose Schachner, nee Jansen, , age 93, of O'Fallon, born November 15, 1922 in Albers, Illinois, passed away Thursday morning, February 4, 2016.
Clara grew up on a farm in Albers and worked for a short time as an aide at St. Elizabeth's Hospital emergency room. She met her future husband Robert at a wedding of mutual friends. Clara moved to O'Fallon, her husband's home town, where they raised three daughters. Clara enjoyed sewing, quilting, canning and baking.
The Schachners were long-time parishioners at St. Clare Catholic Church and charter members of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, both of which she was a quilter and member of the Altar Sodality. She belonged to the Mothers' Club at St. Clare School when the girls were in school. She had the good fortune of being able to babysit her grandchildren as they were growing up.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Robert "Salty" Schachner, whom she married May 24, 1952 in Albers, Ill, and who passed away March 28, 2012; son-in-law Ed Kloustermeyer; parents William and Margaret, nee Kloeckner, Jansen; siblings Martha (Alois) Varel, Estella (Aloys) Heimann, Albert (Catherine) Jansen, Raymond Jansen, Sister Eulogia Jansen, Leo (Henrietta) Jansen, Louis Jansen, Vincent Jansen, brother-in-law Lawrence Straeter, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Edgar and Alma Schachner.
Surviving are her three loving daughters, Donna Kloustermeyer, Cheryl (Mike) Mennerick, and Barb (Jim) Haider, all of O'Fallon; grandchildren Brian (Cindy) Kloustermeyer, Brad (Ashley) Kloustermeyer, Greg (Ashley Rothe), Jenny, and Doug Mennerick, Kristen Haider and Andrea (Jordan) Roper, four step-great-grandchildren Jordan, Jasmine, Anthony, and Dominic.
Also surviving are siblings Norbert Jansen, Edmund (Norma) Jansen, and Marie Straeter; sisters-in-law Marie Jansen and Adele Jansen, and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial donations in her memory are suggested to St. Vincent de Paul, St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Alzheimer's Association, or in the form of masses. Clara's family is especially grateful to the staff of The Arbors at Parkway Gardens in Fairview Heights for their sincerity and care provided over the past 2 ½ years.
Visitation: The family will receive friends from 4:00 – 8:00 pm, Monday, February 8, 2016 at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, and after 10:00 am, Tuesday, February 9, 2016, at the church.
Funeral: Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am, Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at the church, with Msgr. William J. Hitpas presiding. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Shiloh, Illinois.
