Obituary

Daniel Wayne Bowman, age 62, of O'Fallon, Ill., born March 12, 1961, in Pana, Ill., passed away unexpectedly at his home on Monday afternoon, January 29, 2024.

Dan grew up in Ramsey, Ill. where he later graduated from Ramsey (Ill.) Community High School in 1979. During his school years, he was an avid participant in Boy Scouts of America. In high school, he earned his prestigious Eagle Scout Award. When his son, Matt, became of age, they enjoyed continuing the tradition together for many years. Dan graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 1983, where he earned his BA in Business. After college, Dan became the Distribution Manager for NAPA Auto Parts' Distribution Center of St. Louis. When his wife completed dental school in 1990, Dan and Tonya moved to O'Fallon. He worked many years for Bob Wolfe, a local developer. Dan started many of O'Fallon's subdivisions and managed the construction of many new homes built here. He passed on his love for building and making things new again to his children. His daughter, Katherine, worked by his side on many projects including remodeling her new home, texting each other daily on measurements, materials, and techniques. He also taught his son Matt all he knew about cars and motors, fixing rattles, and keeping things in check. He was so proud of his children, including his "chicken doctor" son-in-law, Corey, who was welcomed into the family with open arms in 2021 and whom Dan loved as his own in all they shared. He had been employed with the City of O'Fallon for nearly 22 years where he began working as a building inspector before his promotion to Manager of the Engineering Department. Dan was currently the Manager of Streets, Fleets, & Facilities in the Public Works Department. He also served as the Secretary for the O'Fallon Fire Department's Rural Fire District Board. From 2008-2010, he served as President of Southern Illinois Code Enforcement Officials.

He was an avid carpenter who was always willing to share his fix-it skills with friends and family. Dan loved tinkering in his shed, being outdoors, and mowing his yard at the home he built for his family. This love extended wide, and he was always willing to drop anything he was doing to go help a friend in need. When his kids started in the band program, he became an active part of the O'Fallon Band Boosters from 2006-2015, serving as President 2012-13, supporting his own children and their classmates. Dan spent countless hours building stage props in his own shed for the band shows and pulling the trailers hauling equipment to competitions. Last year, Dan and his wife bought a camper; he loved traveling across the country and making lasting memories of their trips together. He will be remembered as a humble man of principle and integrity who, above all else, loved his family dearly, including his first grandbaby whom he was anxious to greet this summer.

He was preceded in death by his parents John Robert and Kathrine, nee Hulbert, Bowman; his brothers Gerald and David; brothers-in-law Ken Shelby and Steve Stanbery.

Surviving are his high-school sweetheart, Tonya, nee Maxheimer, Bowman, whom he married June 27, 1987; his children Katherine (Corey Johnson) Bowman of Delaware, Ohio; and Matthew Bowman of St. Louis; his siblings Carolyn Shelby, JoAnn Stanbery, Brenda (Mike) Oliver, Roger (Belinda) Bowman, and Byron (Vickie) Bowman; sister-in-law Alice Bowman; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations are suggested to "O'Fallon Area Habitat for Humanity." Checks may be mailed to PO Box 93, O'Fallon, IL 62269 or Wolfersberger Funeral Home, or donations will be accepted at the church.
