Donald L. Freed, Jr., lifelong resident of St. Clair County, near Swansea, Ill., passed away Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his family.
Born at Scott Air Force Base on July 22, 1942, to Donald L. and Agnella, nee Waigand, Freed, Don was the oldest of two sons. Don attended the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering. His career was not only to satisfy employment but was also a passion. Over Don's career as an Engineer he was awarded ten U.S. Patents in various industries. He was a mentor in his field and his designs will remain in good use for years to come. Don's quick sense of humor and youthful approach at life made him loved by many.
Don was preceded in death by his first wife, Linda E. (nee Ploudre) Freed, his father Donald L. Freed, Sr. and mother Agnella Freed; his parents-in-law, Walter and Edna, nee Harmon, Ploudre.
Surviving are his current wife of 21 years, Janet, nee Boron, Freed, three sons, David M. (Laura) Freed, Caleb Freed, Kyle Freed of Swansea, Ill.; three daughters, Julie (Robert) Freed Knutson of Woodlawn, Ill., Kristy (Brad) Freed Pugh of Columbia, Ill., Kristin (Joe Perez) Lanman of Kissimmee, Fla., eight grandchildren, Blade Freed, Ian Freed, Tyler Knutson, Joey Perez, John Perez, and Kevin Perez, Tony Pugh and Danny Pugh; a brother, Mickey R. (Sandra) Freed of Belleville, Ill.; two nieces, Lee Anne (Kent) Emig and Trisha Hess; a nephew, Scott Freed; and his mother-in-law, Jeanette Boron-Alford.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 28, 2011 and from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., Thursday, December 29, 2011 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Fairview Heights. All services will be at the church.
Funeral: Liturgy of the Word Service will begin at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, December 29, 2011, at the church with Rev. Raymond C. Schultz, V.F., officiating.
