Donald S. Beckman, age 74, of Swansea, born August 11, 1935 to Cletus and Rose, nee Carey, Beckman, died Thursday afternoon, April 8, 2010 at his home.
Mr. Beckman, known fondly as "Pee Wee" grew up in O'Fallon, graduating from OTHS in 1954. He joined the US Air Force Reserves and was later sent to active duty during the Bay of Pigs invasion. After attending Barber College, he worked with his father at their barber shop on First Street in O'Fallon for almost 20 years. He began his long career with the Boeing Company as a groundsman, a job he truly enjoyed, and eventually retired 10 years ago from his position as furniture mover. He was a volunteer at Memorial Hospital for several years, receiving recognition for his many hours of volunteer service, which he continued until his health began to decline just a few months ago. He was a faithful member and active volunteer at Cornerstone Christian Church in Shiloh. Don was an avid Nascar fan, and enjoyed his many Friday nights with friends at the Belle Clair Speedway in Belleville. Don was known for keeping a meticulous lawn, as he took pride in his home.
Surviving are his wife, Sharon L., nee Waters, Beckman, whom he married December 15, 1962; his son Eric (Christine) Beckman of O'Fallon, Ill.; his daughter Angela Beckman of Golconda, Ill., his brother Wayne Beckman of Belleville, Ill., his aunt Opal Carey of St. Charles, Mo., and a large extended loving family of in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Marian Redd, and aunt Edna Carey.
Memorial donations may be made in honor of Donald S. Beckman to Cornerstone Christian Church, Shriner's Hospital for Children or Hospice of Southern Illinois.
Visitation: Friends may call from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., Monday, April 12, 2010 at Wolfersberger Funeral Home, 102 W. Washington St., O'Fallon.
Funeral: 1:00 p.m., Monday, April 12, 2010 at the funeral home with Pastor Rick Hodshire and Pastor Thomas H. Waters officiating. Burial will follow at O'Fallon City Cemetery.
