Dorothea Canterbury, of O'Fallon, passed away Sunday morning, December 11, 2005 at her home. She was born February 10, 1912 in New Canton, Illinois to Joseph J. and Ivia (nee Pfeiffer) Feder.
Dorothea was preceded in death by her husband Vernon Canterbury, the love of her life, in 1997 and her parents Joseph J. and Ivia (nee Pfeiffer) Feder, and her brother Dr. Paul J. Feder in 1963.
Dorothea was a 1930 graduate of O'Fallon Township High School. She attended the University of Illinois for a short time, but then found her true vocation of nursing. She was a 1934 graduate of the DePaul Hospital School of Nursing. She cared for private patients until her marriage in 1939. She then became a full-time wife and mother and cared for family, friends, and neighbors whenever needed. She was a volunteer and a Board member at Our World in O'Fallon, an active member at St. Clare Catholic Church and Altar Sodality and St. Clare School Mothers Club, helping in its formation. In 1966, she returned to her nursing career with the opening of the O'Fallon Health Care Center and was employed there until her retirement in 1978. She and Vernon were able to travel as they had planned, seeing Canada, Mexico City, and Virgin Islands.
She is survived by her three children Judy (Jim) Meier of O'Fallon, David (Debbie) Canterbury of Trenton, IL, and Robert (Deborah Bockner) Canterbury of Nelson, British Columbia; five grandchildren, Susan (Douglas) Thomas of Collinsville, IL, Julie (John) Mol of Swansea, IL, Christianne (Lee) Judy of Leesburg, VA, Jennifer (Todd Martin) Canterbury of Victoria, British Columbia, Dylan (Janette Poirer) of Courtney, British Columbia, and eight great grandchildren, Jeremy Phillips, Joshua, Taylor, and Aaron Mol, Jackson Judy, Xylus Martin, Emmett and Ruby Canterbury.
Because our family believes Mom already shares in Jesus' eternal life, we ask that no masses be offered for her. Those who wish to remember her with memorials, Donations may be made to the O'Fallon Saint Vincent de Paul Society, Our World, or Catholic Urban Programs and will be accepted by the funeral home.
Friends may call after 11:00 a.m., Monday, Dec. 12 at St Clare Catholic Church.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 p.m. with Father Jim Deiters presiding.
Interment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Shiloh.
