Fred grew up in Bloomfield, N.J., and enlisted in the US Air Force soon after high school. He was preceded in death by his parents Virginia and Fred Schmitt, Jr., and his grandparents Elsie and Fred Schmitt, Sr., and Madelyn and Charles Fahrenholz.
Surviving are his wife V. Diane Schmitt, nee Shoults, whom he married July 24, 2010; his children Daniel of Goldsboro, N.C., Justin of Dayton, Nev., and Ashlyn of Lehigh Acres, Fla; his step-daughters Melissa (Jeremy Sadler) Wainwright and son Andrew; and Nicole Wainwright, all of Collinsville. Also surviving are his sisters Stacy and Marie Schmitt of Lehigh Acres, Fla.; and best friend Terry Jenkins.
