Retired Army Sergeant First Class Freddie Walter Burkhalter, age 76, of O'Fallon, born June 1, 1942, passed away Friday morning, September 28, 2018 at his home surround by his family.

Freddie served in the Army for 20 years and retired in 1980 as an Aircraft Maintenance Senior Sergeant. He served two tours in Vietnam; he was stationed in Iran, and various locations in the United States.  After retiring from the military, he spent 20 years in Civil Services as an Advisor on the Apache Helicopter.

He was a man of integrity, a patriot, hardworking and respected for his expertise in aviation.  Fred enjoyed traveling, camping in his RV, and riding motorcycles. He enjoyed spending time with his family and loved his animals.

He was preceded in death by his father Walter Burkhalter, and his mother Audrey Garner and her husband Kenneth.

Surviving are his wife Carol, nee Gardner, Burkhalter of O'Fallon, whom he married February 1, 1969 in Shawneetown, Ill.; his children Paul Steven "Steve" Burkhalter of O'Fallon, Keith Michael "Mike" Burkhalter of Kansas City, Mo., Stephanie Michelle (David) Page of San Diego, Calif., Cheryl (Keith) Huster of Fairview Heights, Ill., and Eloice "Vonnie" (Robert) Calcagno of O'Fallon; his grandchildren Keith Michael Burkhalter, Jr., Frederick "Jason" Page, David Barclay, Chad Barclay, Archer Page II, Paul "P.J." Page, Amanda Sowell, Kyliah Page, Carol Lane, Ashley Halcom, Cassandra Carter, Samantha Huster, Joseph Calcagno, and Kayla Calcagno; 15 (plus one on the way) great-grandchildren, and several half-siblings and extended family members.

Visitation: The family will receive friends from 4:00 – 8:00 pm, Friday, October 5, 2018, at Wolfersberger Funeral Home, O'Fallon.

Funeral Service: 10:00 am, Saturday, October 6, 2018 at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be 1 pm, Thursday, October 11, 2018 at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
