Gary D. Heien, Sr., 71, of O'Fallon, born Oct. 22, 1939 in Belleville, died Wednesday morning, June 22, 2011 in his home.
Mr. Heien married Frances Marie Armstrong June 24, 1961 at O'Fallon United Church of Christ. He graduated from O'Fallon Township High School in 1957 and Washington University School of Business and was a lifetime member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He attended O'Fallon United Church of Christ.
He was a past owner and president of Ford Tool Steels, Inc., St. Louis, Missouri.
He was a life member of American Society of Metals and Society of Manufacturing Engineers.
As an esteemed breeder and racehorse owner, he was a member of National Horsemen's Benevolence and Protective Association, Illinois Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association, Illinois Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Foundation. Gary was a huge supporter of the horseracing industry for over 20 years; he was actively racing and breeding horses until his death.
His hobbies included fishing, and coaching little league baseball in O'Fallon. He was proud of his children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by parents Maurice and Lucille, nee Keller, Heien, his paternal grandparents Otto and Mollie Heien, and maternal grandparents John and Ella Keller.
Mr. Heien is survived by his wife, Fran of O'Fallon, son Gary (Ellen) Heien, Jr., of O'Fallon, Ill. and daughter Susan (Steven) Gasser of Sparta, Ill. Also surviving are grandchildren Trevor, Gavin, and Jordan Heien, and Jillian and Luke Gasser.

Visitation: Friends may call at O'Fallon United Church of Christ, 206 W. Adams, O'Fallon, Ill. from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m., Friday, June 24, 2011 and 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 25, 2011. All visitation and services will be at the church.
Funeral: Funeral Service will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 25, 2011 at O'Fallon United Church of Christ with Rev. Dr. Martha Thierheimer officiating. Burial will follow at O'Fallon City Cemetery.
