Obituary

Herbert "Jack" Kelly, age 83, of O'Fallon, born August 22, 1939, in Odin, Ill., to Herbert Kelly, Sr., and Rosemond (nee Williams), Kelly, died Friday, March 24, 2023, at Memorial Hospital, Shiloh, Ill., with his family at his side.

Herb grew up in Salem, Ill., and was a faithful member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church in O'Fallon, Ill., where he was active in Yesterday's Kids. Along with his wife Mollie, he was also deeply enriched by their involvement in Mother Theresa of Calcutta Church in Winchester during their time in California.

After graduating from Salem Community High School he enlisted in the Army, serving in the Military Police in both Korea and Fort Hood, Texas. He worked as a foreman for Granite City Steel where he was the recipient of many awards and recognitions for his years of dedicated service.

Herb was preceded in death by his wife, Mollie (nee Haverland), whom he married on February 4, 1961, his parents, his brother Harold, sisters Pat and Karen, and grandson, Patrick Kelly.

Surviving are his three children, Jeffrey (Barbara), Gail, and Jack (Michaelle); five grandchildren, Paris, Brianna, Peyton, Jack Jr., and Ella Jean. He is also survived by his brother Ronnie and sisters Melba Jones and Rose Boyles.

Herb and Mollie were deeply devoted to one another and a true love story. They enjoyed cooking, entertaining, and being with friends.  Their door was always open, and their hospitality always on display. Herb's service throughout the community touched many lives and his loving influence reached beyond his family. He volunteered as a fireman for the City of Fairview Heights, and he coached youth baseball and basketball. He was an avid sports fan and a loyal supporter of the University of Illinois basketball team. Herb was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather who loved his family immeasurably.

The family strongly encourages memorial donations to Wounded Warrior Project www.woundedwarriorproject.org/donate , and that you please refrain from sending flowers.
