Iris graduated from Philadelphia General Hospital Nursing School in Philadelphia, Penn. in 1958 and upon graduation went on to work in its Emergency/Receiving Ward. She then went to Brookside Hospital, El Cerrito, Calif. to the Surgical Ward prior to entering the Air Force.
Iris and Herb lived in many locations while in the Air Force. Their travels took them to Alaska, Texas, Virginia, New Jersey, South Dakota, California, England, and eventually settling in Illinois. During this time Iris was a member of the Illinois Trekkers Volksmarch Club and served as President for 2½ years and coordinated six volksmarches. She also volunteered at Scott AFB Thrift Shop.
Iris had a great love for her church and its family. She was committed to helping in any capacity. Her involvement with St. Nicholas Catholic Church included Parish Council, Education Committee, Community Life Committee, Eucharistic Minister, decorating the church at Christmas and Easter; and she helped initiate the Tree of Remembrance. She was the first woman to be named as a Parish Trustee and was a Recorder for the Parish School of Religion.
Iris enjoyed her grandchildren and instilled in them the love of nature, Classical music, and the joy of books. Iris loved her garden, reading, cooking, but above all, she loved the Christmas season. Decorating of her house started as early as August and went on for several weeks. "Mother Noel" would host ornament parties and Open Houses to share her love for the holiday with family and friends. In addition, she was a member of two groups of beautiful women; The O'Fallon Magnolias and Tuesday Ladies, who gathered for life celebrations and support.
