Irvin Lloyd Wittmer, age 91, formerly of O'Fallon, Ill., born September 26, 1926 in Summerfield, Ill., died December 19, 2017 in Norman, Okla.
Irv was a resident of O'Fallon from 1953 until 2014, at which time he moved to Oklahoma. He served in the Merchant Marines in World War II, and in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a long-time employee of American Steel Foundries, and later worked at Central Hardware and Dandy Inn.
Irv was active in the community, including memberships in the O'Fallon and Mascoutah Moose Lodge, Korean War Veterans Association, and O'Fallon Booster Club. He was also a former Central School District 104 board member and former Republican Precinct Committeeman for Caseyville Township. His many hobbies and interests included fishing, camping, playing cards, St. Louis Cardinals baseball and St. Louis Blues hockey.
Surviving are his children Stephen (Susan) Wittmer of New Baden, Ill., Susan (Mark) Wegrzynski of Edmond, Okla., and Christine Wittmer of Lexington, Ky.; his grandchildren Sam, Katie, and Abby Wegrzynski; sister Grace Cherry, nieces, nephews, cousins, and his special friend Janetta Newsom.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Barbara, nee Lauer, Wittmer; wife Lorraine, nee Kersting, Wittmer, whom he married February 7, 1953, and who died August 19, 1994; son Michael Wittmer; brothers Arnold and Robert Wittmer; and sisters Elenora Korte and Irma Saenger.
Memorial donations may be made to a veterans' charity of your choice.
Visitation: The family will receive friends from 10 am - Noon, Saturday, June 16, 2018 at Wolfersberger Funeral Home, O'Fallon, followed by a Memorial Service to begin at Noon, with Rev. Christy Eckert officiating. Burial of cremated remains will follow, to include military honors, at Summerfield Cemetery, Summerfield, Illinois.
