James Charles “Jim” Sogor, age 88, of O’Fallon, Ill., passed away August 22, 2026.
Born August 25, 1937 in Cleveland, Ohio, to Joseph and Irene, nee Simon, Sogor, Jim initially attended college on a basketball scholarship. He later earned his Computer Science degree and remained a strong fan and supporter of THE Ohio State University. He had a 40+ year marriage with Dorothy “Diane” Dysert, and she preceded him in death in 1998. He joined the US Navy soon after college, where he served over 10 years as an avionics engineer aboard P2V Neptunes and P5M Marlins, both submarine-hunting naval seaplanes. Jim and his crew were actively searching for submarines in the Caribbean during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Avionics grew into electronics, and Jim remained in the field until he retired in 2002.
Jim’s time in the Navy exposed him to the opportunity of international travel as well as worldwide fishing opportunities – his love for fishing remained with him throughout his life. When asked where he liked to fish, Jim would reply, “anywhere with water.” Jim traveled extensively around the world, both with his family and alone after he became a widower. Jim loved to cook and eat international and local dishes, drink wine, and talk about his many travel adventures – and some of his stories were even true!
Locally, Jim was a past President and longtime member of O’Fallon Sportsmen’s Club, where he was instrumental in their relocation and establishment at their current property.
Jim is survived by his children Kevin Sogor of Fla., Janna Hall of O’Fallon, Andrew (Heather) Sogor of Fairview Heights; and grandson Callum Hall of O’Fallon.
Memorial donations are suggested to the American Kidney Foundation. Message the family, view a photo tribute, and sign the online guest book at www.wfh-ofallon.com.
