Age 76, born in Laytonsville, Christian County, Ky., passed away peacefully Monday morning at Memorial Hospital, in Belleville surrounded by loved ones.
He was preceded in death by his parents Mary Belle, nee Aldridge, Carroll and Herman Richard Carroll, of Evansville, Ind.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 53 years, Shirley Ann, nee Mattingly, Carroll whom he married on June 23, 1956. Also surviving him are his children Kim (Pam) Carroll, of Washington, Ind.; Tammy (Dave) Denning, of Des Moines, Iowa; Rick (Kathy) Carroll, of Salem, Conn.; and Mark (Lori) Carroll, of Belleville, Ill. Grandchildren include Amanda, Carly (Aaron), Jimmy (Kris), Bekah, Hannah, Rachel, Ben, Emily, Lilly and Shannon and five great-grandchildren. Other surviving family members include his sister Dot Meacham, of Hopkinsville, Ky. and brother Doug (Gladys) Carroll, of Evansville, Ind.
Jay worked as a railroad engineer for the CSX (L&N) railroad for greater than 30 years. He retired in 1996. For many years he served as the local chairman of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. He also served on the O'Fallon Planning Commission for several years and had a passion for genealogy.
He also was a U.S. Army Veteran serving much of his time in France and Germany. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal (Germany cluster) and the Good Conduct Medal.
Jay was a committed and humble convert to Catholicism. He was baptized on Easter Sunday, April 11, 2004 at 70 years of age. He was a faithful member of the St. Clare of Assisi Roman Catholic Church in O'Fallon, Ill.
Memorial donations may be made to the St. Clare Church Building Fund and will be accepted at the funeral home.
Visitations: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, March 5, 2010, at Wolfersberger Funeral Home. A second visitation will occur from 10 to 11 a.m., Saturday, March 6, 2010 at St. Clare Catholic Church, 1411 Cross Street, Shiloh, Ill., prior to the funeral.
Funeral: A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 6, 2010 at St. Clare Catholic Church with Father Jim Deiters presiding.
A private family burial will be held at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Shiloh, Ill.
