Jere Francis Buttimer, age 79, of O'Fallon, Ill, born July 1, 1941 in Stoneham, Mass., passed away Sunday afternoon, May 16, 2021.
Jere grew up in Massachusetts, attended Stonehill College in North Easton, and served in the US Air Force from 1964-76 as a meteorologist. He was a long-time carrier for the Belleville News-Democrat and worked as a cashier at Schnuck's in Fairview Heights for over 20 years. He attended St. Clare Catholic Church where he served as a lector and Eucharistic Minister, and was a volunteer driver for parishioners. When his children were younger, he was Assistant Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 94, and coached his kids' soccer teams. Jere was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 4239, and was a friend of Bill for 29 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jeremiah and Louise, nee Doherty, Buttimer; his brother Robert; his infant sister Connie; and his daughter-in-law Sarah Buttimer.
Surviving are his wife Nancy, nee Borkowski, Buttimer of O'Fallon; son Mark Francis Buttimer of Belleville, daughter Amy Louise (Jeff) Zahodnik of Dallas; and sister-in-law Diane Buttimer of Stoneham, Mass. Jere was the beloved "Pop" to his four grandchildren Zachary Buttimer, Aidan, Teagan, and Landon Zahodnik.
In lieu of flowers and other gifts, the family suggests memorials to St. Vincent de Paul, Hospice of Southern Illinois, or St. Clare Church.
Visitation: 4-7 p.m., Friday, May 21, 2021 at St. Clare Catholic Church, 1411 Cross St., Shiloh, Ill.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 22, 2021 at St. Clare Catholic Church, with Msgr. William McGhee presiding. A family graveside service will be held on July 13, 2021 at 2 pm, at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, Mo.
