Gervase Henry Rakers, age 83, of O'Fallon, born August 24, 1930 in Aviston, Ill., died May 16, 2014, as a result of a tragic accident while working in his workshop.
Jerry was a self-taught musician and could play many different instruments. He served honorably in the US Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict and was proud of his service. He farmed with his sons in the area for several years. Jerry worked as a maintenance supervisor for Midwest Rubber Reclaiming in Sauget and retired after 28 years of employment. He then operated R & S Scrap Metal in O'Fallon and spent countless hours tinkering in his backyard workshop.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Bertha, nee Huelsmann, Rakers; his son Don Rakers; and brothers Bert, Maurice and Marcell Rakers.
Surviving are his wife, Mildred M. "Dolly" Rakers, of O'Fallon; children Dale Rakers of Bartelso; Jim (Brenda) Rakers of O'Fallon; Linda (Mike) King of Trenton; Randy (Nadine) Rakers of O'Fallon; and Douglas (Kim) Rakers of New Baden.
Also surviving are his grandchildren Marcia (friend Chad Crawford) Wood, Brad (fiancée Cassie Thompson) Rakers, Bruce (Megan) Rakers, Kelly (Corwin, Sr.) Whicker, Kevin (Lesly) King, and Amber Rakers; and 12 great-grandchildren; sisters Jean Mueller, Ruth Gerstner, Betty (Leonard) Voss, and Mary (Larry) Howell; brothers Bob (Jane) Rakers, Dennis Rakers, Carl (Joan) Rakers, and Virgil (Beverly) Rakers.
In lieu of flowers and other gifts, memorials are suggested to the family.
Visitation: Friends may call from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m., Friday, May 23, 2014, at St. Clare Catholic Church, 1411 Cross St., Shiloh.
Funeral: Mass will begin at 4:00 p.m., Friday, May 23, 2014 at the church, with Rev. Jim Deiters presiding, followed by military honors. Following the Mass, an open house will be held at the Lions Club in Summerfield, Illinois from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Graveside Service: Procession will depart the funeral home promptly at 8:45 a.m., Saturday, May 24, 2014 for a 9:30 a.m. Graveside Service at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, Missouri.
