John Henry Gass, age 62, of O'Fallon, born September 19, 1951 in Belleville, passed away Tuesday morning, March 4, 2014 at Clinton Manor Living Center, New Baden, Illinois.
John had been employed through St. Clair Associated Vocational Enterprises (S.A.V.E) and worked 20 years as a janitor's assistant for the City of Fairview Heights since 1981.
He was a member of St. Clare Catholic Church. John had participated in Special Olympics when he was younger and had enjoyed bowling, fishing, and especially spending time with his family. He was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and loved the music of Elvis.
He was preceded in death by his parents Edwin J. and Mary, nee Schaefer, Gass, brothers Jerome Gass and Edwin Gass, Jr., sister Mary Ellen (Hollis) Missey, brothers-in-law Robert Lehman and Raymond Lane; sister-in-law Virginia, nee Altemeyer, Gass, and his niece Emily Koesterer.
Surviving are his siblings Bette Lehman, Margaret (Mike) Heinz, Joann (Gene) Weilbacher, Theresa (Richard) Koesterer, Kenneth (Carolyn) Gass; sisters-in-law Linda Lane and Linda Gass, and many loving nieces and nephews.
Memorial donations are suggested to Clinton Manor Living Center, Hospice of S. Illinois, American Lung Assoc., or as masses.
Visitation: Friends may call from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m., Thursday, March 6, 2014, at St. Clare of Assisi Catholic Church, and after 9:00 a.m., Friday, March 7, 2014, at the church.
Funeral: Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 7, 2014, at Saint Clare of Assisi Catholic Church, Shiloh, with Rev. James Deiters presiding. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Shiloh, Ill.
