Judith Canterbury Meier, age 73, of Lebanon, born August 14, 1941 in Quincy, Ill., died March 12, 2015 at her residence surrounded by her family after a long battle with cancer.
Judy was a graduate of O'Fallon Township High School Class of 1959. She graduated DePaul Nursing School in 1962, the same school from where her mother graduated. Judy worked as an RN for 35 years at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows. She loved to care for the sick and hungry (both friends and strangers). Not only was Judy's family extremely important to her, but so was Father Roger Karban's scripture class that she attended every week for 40 years where she learned how to live the simple life that Jesus lived and that Father Karban continues to live today. He was not only her spiritual leader but also her very dear friend. She admired the following people who lived the simple life: Father Larry Rosebaugh (an Oblate who was killed in Guatemala), Father Don Eichenseer, a dear friend of hers as well, Florian Beuckman, Joe Hubbard, and Brenda Pehle who continue to live that life today. She was a parishioner of St. Joseph's Parish in Lebanon, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents Emory and Eugenia Canterbury of O'Fallon and maternal grandparents Ivia and Joseph Feder of O'Fallon, as well as her parents Vernon and Dorothea Canterbury.
Surviving are her husband of 50 years Jim; her daughters Susan (Doug) Thomas, Julie (John) Mol, Christianne (Lee) Judy; two brothers Robert (Deborah Bockner) Canterbury of Canada and David (Deborah) Canterbury of Trenton; and six grandchildren Jeremy, Taylor, Aaron, Joshua, Jackson, and Anderson.
Judy believes that she already has eternal life in heaven; therefore no masses are needed in her honor. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Catholic Urban Programs. Special thanks are offered to the staff and physicians at Siteman Cancer Center and Heartland Hospice.
