Kathryn Sullivan, nee Schwaegel, age 91, of O'Fallon, born May 19, 1921, in O'Fallon, Illinois, to Otto and Magdalene, nee Huschle, Schwaegel, the oldest of five children, passed away Friday, February 22, 2013.
Kathryn attained her nursing diploma from St. Mary's Nursing School in East St. Louis. She was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Nurse Corps from 1943-1946. While stationed in Oklahoma, she met Daniel Joseph Sullivan; they married on November 24, 1944 in a private ceremony on an Indian Reservation near Chickasha, Oklahoma, with a young native American couple serving as their witnesses. They lived in Chicago for many years, where she worked on the south side as a hospital nurse. They were married for 53 years before his passing on July 5, 1998.
She was a member of the Red Hat Society, O'Fallon Senior Citizens Club, St. Nicholas Church Yesterday's Kids, and Jolly Seniors at Corpus Christi Church. A humble and gracious lady, Kathryn lived life to the fullest, bringing joy to those who knew her. It was once said of Kathryn, "I wish I could model my life after her."
She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Sullivan; three brothers Myron, Joseph, and Cyril Schwaegel; her parents Otto and Magdalene, nee Huschle, Schwaegel; great nephew Daniel Solis and great niece Amy Schwaegel.
Surviving are her sister Louise Schwaegel of O'Fallon; nieces and nephews, Michael (Amy) Schwaegel, Judy (Dale) Biver, Patricia (Roberto) Solis, Thomas (Colene) Schwaegel, Teresa (Ed) Votrain, Mary Beth Schwaegel, JoAnn (Craig) Pickett, Margaret (John) Stice, Elaine (Barry) Pultman, Carol Schwaegel, Steve Schwaegel, Susan (John) Mavis, and Barb Schwaegel, and many other loving extended family members.
Memorial Donations will be accepted at the funeral home and are suggested to Linus Blankets, Etc., (an organization that provides security blankets to seriously ill or traumatized children), masses, or St. Clare Catholic School.
Visitation: Friends may call from 4:00 – 8:00 pm, Friday, March 1, 2013 at Wolfersberger Funeral Home, O'Fallon.
Visitation will also be 8:45 am – 9:30 am, Saturday, March 2, 2013 at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, O'Fallon.
Funeral: Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 am, Saturday, March 2, 2013 at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, O'Fallon, with Msgr. William J. Hitpas presiding.
Burial with military honors will follow at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Shiloh.
