Kurt worked for Horner and Shifren for 39 years as an engineering technician. He worked on many projects in the St. Louis metro area, but he was most proud of his work on Busch Stadium II. Kurt was an active member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, serving as an usher, along with his wife Ann, and volunteering at numerous parish chicken dinners and breakfasts. He enjoyed watching air shows and Cardinals baseball. He spent many days hauling water, working in his garage, driving Ann on her errands, mowing his yard, and worrying about snow.

He was preceded in death by his father Arthur Merckel, his mother Clara Merckel, and brother Clyde Merckel.

Surviving are his loving wife of 52 years Ann Merckel, nee Shaffer, whom he married May 22, 1965 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Shiloh, Ill., two daughters Fran (Mike) Cook of Lebanon, Kay (Joe) Cavataio of O'Fallon, and a son KC (Mandy) Merckel of O'Fallon; adult grandchildren Jenny (Garrett) Mitchell of Affton, Mo., and Patrick (Jason Esker) Cook of St. Louis, Mo. Most recently, he enjoyed playing with and making up funny nicknames for his new grandbabies Aurelia Merckel, JJ Cavataio and great-grandbaby Lila Mitchell. Also surviving are his sister Bev (Larry) Dennis of Mattoon, Ill., and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Memorial donations are suggested to Corpus Christi Catholic Church, in the form of Masses or to the Building Fund, or to Hospice of Southern Illinois.
