LaVergne J. "Dick" Seipp, age 90, born June 14, 1924, in O'Fallon, passed away Tuesday night, February 24, 2015 at St Elizabeth's Hospital, Belleville, Ill.
Dick was a lifelong, faithful member of St. Clare of Assisi Roman Catholic Church and a charter member of Knights of Columbus Council 4239. He graduated from O'Fallon Twp. High School and volunteered for the US Navy in 1943. He served during World War II on the USS Mount Olympus, a communication and command ship in the South Pacific where he was a radio operator. He was awarded the Commendation Medal for excellent service.
As a young man, Dick began working as a milkman for Quality Dairy. Then, in 1961, together with his wife, Norma, they started JMJ Sanitation. They were in business for 29 years until Dick retired in 1990. Also, in 1961, he began a long and successful career as an umpire. He was inducted into the Southside League Fast Pitch Softball Hall of Fame and into the Mont-Clair Baseball League Hall of Fame. Dick was a fun and uplifting grandfather. His life was an example of faith and love for God.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Norma Frances, nee Siegel, Siepp, whom he married May 13, 1948 in Blackjack, Ill., and who passed away May 30, 2011; parents John A. and Mary Rose, nee Zeisset, Seipp; his brother Robert Seipp, his twin brother Melvin Seipp, and his brother-in-law Joe Heumann.
He is survived by his five children Stephen, of Collinsville; Craig, of O'Fallon; Mark of Lewisville, Tex.; Barbara Ann of O'Fallon; and Robb (Pam) of Ladera Ranch, Calif.; 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Gloria (Leo) Artiano, of Dallas, Tex., sister Hope Heumann of Atascadero, Calif.; his sisters-in-law Mary Ann Seipp of O'Fallon, and Loretta Seipp of Madison, Ill.
Dick preferred memorials to be in the form of Masses to St. Clare Church, knowing he needed prayers more than flowers.
Visitation: Friends may call from 4:00 — 9:00 pm, Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at St. Clare of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, 1411 Cross Street, Shiloh. The Rosary will be recited at 8:00 pm.
Funeral: The Rosary will be recited at 9:00 am, Thursday, March 5, 2015 at the church, followed by Mass of Christian Burial to begin at 10:00 am, with Rev. James Deiters presiding. Burial with military honors will follow at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Shiloh.
