Louis Gerardi, age 72, of Waterloo, Ill., formerly of O'Fallon, born February 27, 1940 in Belleville, passed away Saturday, December 1, 2012.
He grew up working in the family nursery, Louis Gerardi's Nursery, which was founded by his father, formerly located in Fairview Heights and later O'Fallon. He had attended St. Albert School and St. Clare School and graduated from Belleville West in 1958.
He developed his green thumb as a dahlia cultivator, belonging to the St. Louis Dahlia Society. Louis had retired from Alton & Southern Railway after 39 years of service as Chief Clerk. He was active in area amateur ham radio clubs – K9KWL, and was a leader in Wranglers 4-H Club.
Louis was one of the first alderman in Fairview Heights, and volunteered with Meals on Wheels in Waterloo. He was a dependable dad, leading and teaching by his example of hard work and dedication to family. He was a long-time faithful parishioner at St. Clare Church, where he worked in the vegetable garden for many years. He leaves his sons with great memories of working in the yard and garden, cutting wood, and sledding. Nicknamed "Sonny" because of his happy and sunny disposition, Uncle Sonny was much loved by his many nieces and nephews.
Louis was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia (nee Bradley) Gerardi in 2007 and his parents Louis and Margaret (nee Zollner) Gerardi.
He is survived by three sons, Louis Gerardi, Jr. of Rolla, Mo., Leon (Vicki) Gerardi of Cookeville, Tenn., and Patrick Gerardi of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla; three grandchildren Jennifer, Ethan, and Olivia. Also surviving are his brother John (Fran) Gerardi of Wentzville, Mo., sisters-in-law Mary (Charles) Ingles of Freeburg, Ill, Jane (Dennis) Voegele of Columbia, Ill., and brother-in-law James (Mary) Bradley of Waterloo, Ill.
Memorials may be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
Visitation: Friends may call from 3:00 – 8:00 pm, Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012 at the church and after 9:00 am, Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012 at St. Clare Catholic Church, Shiloh.
Funeral Service: Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am, Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at St. Clare Catholic Church with Rev. James Deiters presiding.
Interment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Shiloh, Ill.
