IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Madonna Diane
Wortman
December 16, 1949 – January 27, 2022
MaDonna Diane Wortman, age 72, of Lebanon, Ill., born December 16, 1949 in East St. Louis, passed away January 27, 2022 at Memorial Hospital, Belleville, Ill., following complications from pneumonia.
MaDonna grew up in Collinsville and graduated from St. Teresa Academy in 1967. In 1970, MaDonna ventured out West and started a new life in San Francisco. After working over 20 years as a telephone operator, MaDonna returned to Caseyville, Ill. to be closer to her family. She worked as a hotel clerk for about twelve years in the Metro-East area. She was a hard worker and always kept busy until 2012 when she retired in Lebanon, Ill. and turned the focus to taking care of herself and her health. She spent much of the last decade reuniting with her high school pals, taking road trips across the country to visit family and friends, and doting on her grandchildren.
MaDonna faced a lot of adversity in her life - she successfully battled polio and scoliosis as a child, lost her father at a young age, and was a working single mother for most of her life. Because of her resilience and perseverance, when she became critically ill with pneumonia in September 2021, her family remained hopeful that she would recover, and indeed she rallied and was making great progress. She was determined to get better, be independent again and return home. Her sudden passing was a shock to us all.
Many would call MaDonna "a free spirit" who loved to travel and see new things. Even though she was physically limited from the polio, MaDonna was an excellent dancer. She loved music, art, old movies, baseball, and horseracing. She had strong likes and dislikes, never forgot a birthday, and was always late. Her fun and sweet personality will be missed by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents Frank Leonard Wortman and Dorothy Donald Wortman.
Surviving are her siblings Susan Triplett (nee Wortman), William (Judy) Wortman, Edward Wortman, and Charles Jenkins; her son Eric (Janine) Wohlrab, Jr., of Woodbridge, Virg.; daughter Santina (Martin Collerd) Wortman of Chicago; and four grandchildren: Roman, Roland, Mirabelle, and Anthony.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to one of the local institutions that MaDonna supported regularly: either the Missouri Botanical Gardens, Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville, or Rosati-Kain High School in St. Louis.
The family will receive friends from 4 – 7 pm, Friday, February 4, 2022 at Wolfersberger Funeral Home, 102 W. Washington St., O'Fallon. A Funeral Service will be held at 10 am, Saturday, February 5, 2022 at the funeral home. A private graveside service will be held with the family at Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemetery, Belleville, Illinois.
