Obituary

Margaret  "Peggy" L. (Obernuefemann) Fetzer, nee Swengross, age 88, formerly of O'Fallon, Ill.,  passed to eternal life suddenly on December 24, 2017 at Menorah Medical Center, Overland Park, Kans.  Peggy was born to George and Margaret Swengross on February 15, 1929 in St. Louis, Mo., the oldest of four children.

Peggy was very active in many local organizations.  She served as President of the O'Fallon Jaycee-ettes and of the VFW Auxiliary.  She was a charter member of the Collinsville Sweet Adeline's. She raised five children with her husband Leo in O'Fallon, Ill., before embarking on a career as a government employee starting at DECCO at Scott AFB.  In 1976 she moved to Washington, D.C. to work at the Pentagon.

In 1990 she married Larry Fetzer and through this union she gained two more sons. She retired with 30 years' service and they relocated to Kissimmee, Fla., where they became frequent visitors to Disneyworld.  Many family members and friends used their home as lodging while visiting the Orlando area and were always welcomed.  Upon the death of Larry in 2013, she moved back to the O'Fallon area and resided at Cedar Hurst in Shiloh where she met many old schoolmates also residing there before moving this past June to Brookdale Senior Living in Overland Park, Kans.

Peggy was a music lover who was always extolling her children to take up anything musical. She loved to listen to The Glenn Miller Orchestra, "Old Blue Eyes" Frank Sinatra, and Johann Strauss.  But what she enjoyed even more than music was dancing, and she taught all of us how to dance.  She always said the men have it easy, "the ladies have to dance going backwards - and in high heels."

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, George and Margaret Swengross, husbands; Leo Obernuefemann and Larry Fetzer.

She is survived by her children Steven Obernuefemann and wife Cheryl of Bridge City, Texas, Patricia, nee Obernuefemann, Sheldon and husband David of Overland Park, Kans., Leo A. Obernuefemann and wife Tara of Elkland, Mo.,  Eva Marie Obernuefemann and friend Michael Darling of O'Fallon, Paul R. Obernuefemann of O'Fallon,  John Fetzer and wife Lori of Penfield, Penn., and Paul Fetzer and wife Laura of Mount Airy, Md.  Also surviving are her siblings Jeanette Keck, George Swengross and wife Pat, and Barbara Knewitz and husband Wilmer.  Peggy had 22 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude's Hospital, Memphis Tenn. or to St. Clare School Chapel. Peggy's wishes were to be cremated.
