She was born on October 14, 1940, in St. Louis, Mo. As the eldest child of Paul W. and Matilda (Krill) Gayer, she lived the first years of her life in St. Louis before moving to Zeigler, Ill. on her 9th birthday, along with her brother Bill, sister Margaret Ann, and brother Tom.

They were posted to a series of bases in the western US where they had three children together before he was killed in Vietnam in 1968. Marian and her children then lived in Herrin and then Carbondale for a few years before she married James B. Scuras of Murphysboro, Ill. in 1971, becoming a military wife for a second time; and the family was based at Quonset Point in Rhode Island. They had two children together. After his military retirement, they moved to Murphysboro.

Marian worked at the YMCA in Carbondale and Charter Bank in Murphysboro. After being widowed again in 1992, she got a degree from John A. Logan College, and she worked as a medical transcriptionist. After retirement, she moved to live with her daughter in O'Fallon, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her 2 husbands; her son, Kevin Timothy Scuras; and her sister, Margaret Ann Baughman.
