Mary Elizabeth Garrett, nee Choma, age 97, formerly of O'Fallon, born in St. Joseph, Mo., died Friday morning, July 11, 2014 at Cedar Ridge Health & Rehab Center in Lebanon, Ill.
The daughter of Ukrainian immigrants, Mary was the oldest of seven children. She married Elmer Garrett in 1940 in East St. Louis, Ill. Together, in 1948, they formed E.S. Garrett & Co. Furniture Upholstery and Refinishing and operated a successful business together for 45 years, first in East St. Louis and later on East State Street in downtown O'Fallon, from which they retired.
Mary's artistic talents were evident in her oil paintings and seamstress work, both for her family and in the business. She was a strong woman who valued her family heritage. It was important to share her own traditions in her family recipes.
She was preceded in death by her husband Elmer S. Garrett; her parents Michael and Barbara, nee Black, Choma; her sons James, Timothy, and Joseph Garrett; her siblings Catherine Mueller, Helen Choma, Daniel Choma, Michael Choma, Jr., Joseph Choma, and John Choma.
Surviving are her children Elmer "Paul" (Connie) Garrett of O'Fallon, and Patricia (Richard) Fabiani of Florida; her grandchildren Richard Garrett, Michelle (Scott) Isom, Jason Garrett, Angie (Phil) Klohr, Tanya (Jack) Prawica, Paul J. (Joni) Garrett, Marlo (Brian) Rakers, Kelly Garrett, Richard Fabiani, II, Christian Fabiani, and Alicia Fabiani; 10 great-grandchildren Justin Garrett, Jordan and Harrison Klohr, Chloe, Hanna, Michael, and Lily Prawica, and Isabel, Gavin, and Reagan Garrett. Also surviving are former daughter-in-law Deborah Garrett of Belleville; and daughter-in-law Linda (John) Magee of Phoenix, Ariz.
Memorials are suggested to St. Clare Catholic Church or Hospice of Southern Illinois.
Visitation: Friends may call from 9:00 – 10:45 a.m., Monday, July 14, 2014 at St. Clare of Assisi Catholic Church, Shiloh.
Funeral: Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 14, 2014, at the church, Rev. Clyde Grogan, presiding. Burial will be at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Shiloh, Ill.
