Melvin W. "Mouse" Seipp, age 86, lifelong resident of O'Fallon, Ill., born June 14, 1924 in O'Fallon, was granted eternal rest on Friday, May 27, 2011 at Cedar Ridge Healthcare Center, Lebanon, Illinois.
Mel, nicknamed "Mouse," attended St. Clare Catholic grade school and O'Fallon Township High School. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1943 and honorably served during World Way II in the Carrier Aircraft Service Unit. He married Mary Ann Fohne on June 28, 1948 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, in Black Jack, (near Troy) Illinois. For 30 years, he worked at the former Dow Chemical Company, in Madison, Illinois, later Spectralite, processing aluminum coils. He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Clare of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, where he sang in the choir and served as an usher for many years. Mel loved playing cards with family and friends, reading old Westerns and listening to Hank Williams music. Along with many of the Seipp family, Mel was known for his ping pong talent. In the summertime, he enjoyed horseshoes and washer tournaments.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, John A. and Mary Rose, nee Zeisset, Seipp; brother Robert Seipp; brothers-in-law, Joseph Heumann, Clarence Fohne, Merrill Fohne, Alfred Benhoff, Donald Christ, Walter Hettenhausen, sister-in-law Virginia Hettenhausen, and grandchildren Jason Sibert, Karen Rogers, and Nicholas Seipp.
Surviving are his loving wife of nearly 63 years, Mary Ann Seipp of O'Fallon; his five children, Lawrence (Shirley) Seipp of O'Fallon; Patricia A. Rogers of Belleville; James (Pam) Seipp of O'Fallon; Mary Ellen (Robert) Gehrs of O'Fallon, and David (Monique) Seipp of Shiloh; his ten grandchildren, Joel Seipp, Amy Seipp, Anna Seipp, Laura Seipp, Travis DeArmon, Kyle Seipp, Colan Seipp, Nathan Seipp, Candice Seipp, and Sheila Black; two step grandchildren, Mikael (Malin) Strahlem, and Brandi Richendollar; three great-grandchildren Austin Black, Josephine DeArmon, and Cory Gehrs; step great-grandson Alexandra Strahlem; and one great-great-grandson, Daymian Carter Gehrs.
Also survivng are his twin brother, L.J. "Dick" (the late Norma) Seipp, of O'Fallon; sisters Gloria (Leo) Artiano of Dallas, Tex.; and Hope Heumann of Calif., and sister-in-law, Loretta Seipp of Madison, Ill.
Memorial donations are suggested in the form of Masses to St. Clare of Assisi Roman Catholic Church or to Cedar Ridge Healthcare Center in appreciation for the love and care that has been shown to Mel and his family over the past 2 ½ years.
Visitation: Friends may call from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at St. Clare of Assisi Roman Catholic Church. The Rosary will be recited at 8:00 pm. Visitation will continue from 9:00 – 9:45 a.m., Thursday, June 2, 2011, at the church.
Funeral Service: Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 2, 2011, at St. Clare of Assisi Roman Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Shiloh.
