IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Michael C.
Meyer
August 1, 1947 – January 1, 2021
Michael "Mike" Charles Meyer, age 73, passed away on January 1, 2021 in the comfort of his home in O'Fallon, IL after a long battle with Alzheimer's.
Mike was born in Belleville, IL on August 1, 1947 to Mary and Russell Meyer. He was a graduate of Belleville High School in 1965. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Microbiology from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, later followed by a Master's Degree from University of Missouri, St. Louis. He was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity, Kappa Tetarton chapter. Mike had a successful career as a Microbiologist with McDonnell Douglas-Vitek before he became co-owner of O'Fallon Lumber in 1985. He was very involved in the O'Fallon community, serving as President of the O'Fallon Chamber of Commerce in 1996, President of the Rotary Club, eight-year member of the O'Fallon District 90 School Board, active member of the O'Fallon First United Methodist Church, avid YMCA goer, and coach of many Booster Club sports teams. Later in life, he served as a substitute teacher at various schools in the Southern Illinois area.
While working at Vitek, Mike met his future wife, Susan Meyer (nee Carter), and their love story began. Their first date was a shopping trip to Carol House Furniture (because they liked nice things). They married on January 24, 1987. Together they raised two sons, Travis and Cameron. His family was the most important part of his life. He set the standard for the term family man. He had a hard time telling his boys "no".
Mike was a soft-spoken, gentle man with a calming presence and selfless mindset. He cherished everything about the outdoors. He looked forward to frequent family trips to Hilton Head Island, SC, where he relished in the warmth of the beach. He enjoyed traveling to Vail or Beaver Creek, CO to ski on a beautiful fresh white snow. "Nothing like Spring skiing" was a phrase he and Sue would often exclaim, regardless of the current season. You could often find him on the golf course, especially during his annual golf trips with friends. He had a passion for camping, canoeing, fishing, and chopping firewood. If there was an opportunity to take his shirt off, Mike was there. Each family dog meant the world to Mike, and they would often accompany him on his outdoor adventures. Mike was a devoted father and husband, and friend to many. He will be deeply missed and forever loved by all who knew him.
Mike was preceded in death by his father and mother. He is survived by his wife of nearly 34 years, Sue; his two sons Travis (Megan) and Cameron; his sisters, Barbara (Joe) Reichert and Gail (Greg) Carson; several cousins, nieces, nephews, and many other family members.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service, scheduled for noon on Sunday, January 10 th , at Far Oaks Golf Course. Social distancing guidelines will be followed and guests will be encouraged to depart at the conclusion of the service. This will be an outdoor event at the pavilion to the right of the club house. Please be sure to dress warm. Dear friend and Pastor, Ron Dickinson, will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Alzheimer's Research Association or Randy's Rescue Ranch in Mike's honor. Once Covid restrictions are lifted, and after the weather begins to warm, there will be a celebration of live event to honor Mike at a date and location to be determined.
