"Neil's wings have folded." Senior Master Sergeant Neil J. Dapson, (retired), has received his last assignment; he reported for duty to Heaven on Sunday evening, October 14, 2012.
Born April 13, 1933 to Charles and Audrey Dapson, in Oneida, N.Y. Neil was a US Air Force veteran, and served our country for 30 years. He was assigned to seven different countries in the Air Force Security Service and Air Force Air Rescue Service.
Scott Field was his first assignment and Scott Air Force Base was his last assignment. While at Burtonwood Air Base, England, he met and married Joan M. Holgate on February 9, 1957. Upon his retirement, he continued to work for the government for 15 years for AVSCOM in St. Louis as a helicopter parts specialist.
Neil was preceded in death by his wife of 34 years, Joan M. Dapson, and his second wife of 18 years, Mary Ann Dapson.
Surviving are his daughter Donna K. Dapson of Elmhurst, Ill.; son Dale R. (Landra) Dapson of Fairview Heights and his sweetheart and loving companion Shirley Adams of Iuka, Ill.; his step-daughter Michele Hitt of Cottleville, Mo; his sister Linda York, of Wichita Falls, Texas; his beloved grandchildren Dale Ryan (Raeanna Heskett) Dapson, Holly (Chris) Logsdon, Hannah Lea Dapson, and Isabela Hitt; and two great-granddaughters, Tessa and Ava Dapson.
Memorial donations are suggested to the Siteman Cancer Center in St. Louis, Mo. or to the family.
Visitation: Friends may call from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at Wolfersberger Funeral Home, 102 W. Washington St, O'Fallon.
Funeral: Memorial Service to honor Neil's life will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, October 17, 2012, at the funeral home. Procession will follow to O'Fallon City Cemetery, where military rites will be rendered.
