Obituary

Peggy Berens, age 87, of O'Fallon, Ill., born May 20, 1925, in Taylorville, Ill., to Edward and Mary F., nee O'Neill, Hemmer, passed away Monday, January 14, 2013, at her home.

Born Mary Imelda Hemmer, Peggy and her family moved to O'Fallon when she was 10 years old. She attended St. Clare Grade School and O'Fallon Township High School, graduating in 1943. She worked at Independent Engineering after graduation. In 1957, she started a career with the State of Illinois as a fiscal supervisor for DCFS where she retired after 30 years of service. Following her reitrement, she worked at Bank of O'Fallon in bookkeeping. She was a member of the St. Clare Adult Choir for 30 years and was the soprano soloist, accompanied many times by her nephew Ed Kloustermeyer for weddings. She was also a member of St. Clare Altar Sodality.

Ms. Berens was preceded in death by her parents, and her siblings Robert Schumacher, Katherine Geraldine Kloustermeyer, Regina Koch, Eugene Hemmer, and Thomas "Mike" Hemmer.

Surviving are her son Michael (Marie) Berens, his children Shawn (Maxine) Berens and Patrick Berens; her son Mark (Cathy) Berens, his children Allen (Jamie) Raber, Lisa and Tim Berens; and her daughter Mary (Frank) Morski, and her children Dr. Lynn Morski and Lt. Eric Morski, Esq., US Army; one great-granddaughter Natalie Berens and many loving friends and extended family members.

Special thanks to Traci, her nurse at Heartland Hospice, and supportive caregivers Mary Anne Burroughs, Judy Bugger, the late MaryLee Hillen, Sheila Cope, and Aunt Mary Ellen Battoe for all their loving care over the years.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Clare Church Building Fund or to Society of St. Vincent de Paul in care of St. Clare Church.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m., Friday, January 18, 2013, at St. Clare Catholic Church, and from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 19, 2013, at the church.

Funeral: Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 19, 2013 at the church with Rev. James Deiters, presiding. Interment will follow at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
