Philip E. Gooley, III, age 89, born in Syracuse, N.Y., passed away in Belleville.

Philip grew up in the Irish neighborhood of Tipperary Hill in Syracuse, N.Y. He attended St. Patrick's school and went on to Syracuse University. Phil joined the U.S. Army January 1942, served in the South Pacific, and rose to the rank of staff sergeant. When the war was over, Phil returned to Syracuse, looked up a beautiful Irish girl he remembered, and a year later married Rita Anne Halloran in St. Patrick's Church November 28, 1946. Phil had a long successful career with the government, filled with many awards and accommodations, retiring after 37 years. He and Rita were blessed with many years of happy retirement. They enjoyed spending time with their children and grandchildren, traveling, and were members of the original St. Clair Square Mall Walkers. Phil's favorite hobby was reading which led him to the O'Fallon Library. He served as President of the O'Fallon Library Board as well as President of the Kaskaskia System Library Board. Phil was a member of St. Clare Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the O'Fallon VFW Post 805.

He was preceded in death by his wife Rita (nee Halloran) Gooley who died March 3, 2008; his parents Philip E. Gooley, Jr. and Marion, nee Harriott, Gooley.

He is survived by his daughter Marianne & her husband, Michael Juergensmeyer of Ellisville, Missouri; and their children, Philip and Rachel; his daughter, Jeanne & her husband, Paul McCleery of Lebanon; and her children John Elafros, Erin (Keith) Shovlin, Michael Elafros, and Timmy Elafros.
