Obituary

Elmo Ray Brasel, age 83, long-time resident of O'Fallon, born July 25, 1928 in Coulterville, Ill., to Elmo and Mary C., nee Scott, Brasel, passed away March 9, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family.

Ray was an Air Force veteran, serving as an aircraft mechanic during the Korean Conflict. After his honorable discharge, he continued in civil service at Scott AFB. He later worked for TSARCOM (Troop Support) as an aviation equipment specialist. After his retirement, he was glad to work as self-proclaimed "Custodial Engineer" at his church, for the next 10 years. Ray was a dedicated member of O'Fallon United Church of Christ, past Consistory President, and choir member. He was a member of American Legion Post 137, AF & AM 576, and O'Fallon Sportsmen's Club. Ray was a long-time supporter of OTHS athletics, particularly OTHS baseball. He'll be remembered for breakfast at Hardee's, sharing candy canes with anyone he met at Christmastime, singing a happy tune, fishing, and camping. He tinkered with small engine repairwork in his garage while listening to the Cardinals on the radio. Ray enjoyed many things in life, but none so much as being with his family.

Surviving are his beloved wife and high school sweetheart, Carol, nee Marvel, Brasel, whom he married June 10, 1950; his children, Denise (Harold) Stayton of Centerton, Ark., Beverly (Jim) McFarland of Burns, Tenn., Julie (Steve) Totten of O'Fallon., and Scott (Lois) Brasel of O'Fallon; his grandchildren, Jason Portz (special friend Dawn Bauer), Tiffany (Paul) Owens, Katie Brasel, Hannah Brasel; his sweet great-granddaughter Raelyn Owens plus one on the way; and his sister Martell Harris of Whittier, Calif.,

He was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters Eula Brasel, Altha Robertson, Margaret Welling, and his twin Elma Faye Schneider.

Memorial donations may be made to O'Fallon United Church of Christ or Hospice of S. Illinois.
