Robert James Dean, age 84, of O'Fallon, born December 16, 1925 in Denver, Colo., died Friday morning, October 8, 2010 at Cedar Ridge Healthcare in Lebanon, Ill.
Bob grew up near Ponca City, Okla. and enlisted in the Navy at age 17, serving during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He crossed over into the Army Air Corps and while stationed in Europe in 1956, he met June Spink, a British Airways flight attendant, while she was vacationing in Rome. They married a year later on November 28, 1957 at Aviano, Italy.
Bob worked in Casualty Reporting while serving in the Air Force until he retired in 1966. He began his civil service work at Scott AFB in 1967, working in Civil Engineering, retiring in 1991. He was a life member and former commander of VFW Post 805, where he served on the Honor Guard and was instrumental in organizing the Veterans' Day parade. He had a strong work ethic and was part of the "Greatest Generation," proudly serving his country.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willard Willis Dean and Frances Kusera Dean; his beloved daughter Elaine Margaret Dean, who died in 1986, and his siblings Dorothy Hanna, Dr. Willard "Bud" Dean, and Col. Glenn D. Dean.
He is survived by his dear wife, June Margaret Dean, of O'Fallon; son Christopher Robert Dean, of O'Fallon, daughter Andrea (Anthony) Abbott of Mascoutah; and four grandchildren, Stephen, Emily, Rebecca, and Mark Dean; sisters Margaret (Marty) Mulkey of Houston, Tex., Lt Col Charlene Dean, USAF (retired) of Petosky, Mich., brothers Dr. Dan Dean of Mt. Pleasant, Mich., Noble Dean of Caldwell, Ida., and sister Dr. Karen (William) Douglas of Morgantown, W.Va.

Visitation: Friends may call from 9:00 am – Noon, Saturday, October 16, 2010 at Wolfersberger Funeral Home, O'Fallon. The O'Fallon VFW Post 805 will conduct a service at 11:00 am., Saturday, October 16, 2010 at Wolfersberger Funeral Home.
Funeral: A funeral service will begin at Noon, Saturday, October 16, 2010, at Wolfersberger Funeral Home. Burial with military honors will follow at O'Fallon City Cemetery.
