Obituary

Robert A. "Salty" Schachner, age 89, lifelong resident of O'Fallon, Ill., born August 13, 1922 to Edgar and Mary, nee Walter, Schachner, passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2012, in his home.

Bob attended St. Clare Grade School. He was a charter member of St. Clare parish choir, and later a charter member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, where he attended daily mass for many years.

Bob served in the US Army, during World War II, in the European theatre. He worked many years in the shoe production industry, including Belleville Shoe, Brown Shoe, and Wohl Shoe, until 1977. He then worked as a custodian in O'Fallon District 90, at Hinchcliffe Elementary School, for ten years.

He was a well-known, talented Southpaw pitcher for O'Fallon in the St. Clair County League in the 1940s, gaining local notoriety for pitching a no-hitter in 1946.


Mr. Schachner was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Edgar C. (Alma) Schachner, Jr., his son-in-law Ed Kloustermeyer; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Martha and Aloys Varel, Estelle and Alois Heimann, Albert and Catherine Jansen, Raymond Jansen, Sister Eulogia Jansen, Leo Jansen, and Louis Jansen.


Surviving are his wife Clara, nee Jansen, whom he married May 24, 1952 in Albers, Ill.; his three loving daughters, Donna Kloustermeyer, Cheryl (Mike) Mennerick, and Barb (Jim) Haider, all of O'Fallon; grandchildren Brian (Cindy) Kloustermeyer, Brad Kloustermeyer, Greg, Jenny, and Doug Mennerick, Kristen and Andrea Haider.

Also surviving are brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Norbert Jansen, Vincent and Marie Jansen, Edmund and Norma Jansen, Marie and Larry Straeter, Henrietta Jansen, and Adele Jansen, and many nieces and nephews.


Memorial Donations may be in the form of Masses, to St. Clare School Capital Development Fund, or to Hospice of Southern Illinois.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday, March 30, 2012 in the Day Chapel of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, O'Fallon, and one hour prior to Mass on Saturday.

Funeral: Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, March 31, 2012, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, with Rev. William Hitpas presiding. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Shiloh, Ill.
