Roger Ray Hewitt, age 91, of Mascoutah, born August 8, 1924, passed away Wednesday, November 4, 2015 at the Heritage at The Colonnade, in O'Fallon, Ill.
At a young age, Roger enlisted in the US Navy during World War II, serving aboard the USS Eagle 56 and the Aircraft Carrier USS Seabonay as a gunner and mechanic. In 1951, he transferred to the Air Force and served as an aircraft mechanic and inspector on T-33, F-84, and F-86, among other aircraft. In 1965, he retired as TSgt from active duty and served 20 additional years as a civil servant. Soon after his Air Force retirement, Mr. Hewitt was appointed the part-time Chief of Police for Shiloh. He served in this capacity until 1978, and then became a Deputy Marshal for O'Fallon Police Department. He had been an investigator for the Major Case Squad and was a former member of Southern Illinois Police Chiefs Association. Roger enjoyed woodworking and yardwork. He attended church at First Baptist Church O'Fallon.
Surviving are his wife Coretta, nee Rager, Hewitt of Mascoutah, his three sons Roger Dale (Sue) Hewitt of Fredericksburg, Va., Lance James (Jennifer) Hewitt of O'Fallon, and Wade Darryl (Debra) Hewitt of O'Fallon; his grandchildren Jason, Melissa, Hayden, Mason, Adrienne, Alexander, Cassidy, and Nicole; and five great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to First Baptist Church O'Fallon, to support various mission programs.
Visitation: Friends may call from 9:00 – 11:00 am, Monday, November 9, 2015 at First Baptist Church O'Fallon.
Funeral: Memorial Service will begin at 11:00 am, Monday, November 9, 2015 at the church, with Skip Leininger and Dale Hewitt officiating. Military committal service will follow at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, Mo.
