Shirley Ann  Carroll, nee Mattingly, age 81, of O'Fallon, Ill., born December 16, 1935 in Henderson, Ky., passed away peacefully Thursday morning, September 7, 2017 at Memorial East Hospital, Shiloh, Ill., in the presence of loved ones.

Shirley worked as a retail clerk for 25 years at Famous & Barr in Fairview Heights until her retirement. She volunteered her time at the O'Fallon Community Food Pantry and the county soup kitchen. She was a faithful member of the St. Clare of Assisi Roman Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents Della Jane Mattingly, nee Polly, and Robert Mattingly, of Henderson, Ky.; her husband of  50+ years James "Jay" W. Carroll, of Christian County, Ky.; her son Kim James Carroll, of O'Fallon, Ill.; and her grandson James Carroll of Washington, Ind. She was also preceded in death by her brother Robert Mattingly, Jr.,  and her sisters Lucille (Melvin) Bellew; June (Merle) Hickman; Ann (Dalton) Benedict; and Judy Speaks.

Surviving are her daughter-in-law Pam Carroll, of Washington, Ind..; her daughter Tammy (Dave) Denning, of Des Moines, Iowa; her son Rick (Kathy) Carroll, of Salem, Conn.; and her son Mark Carroll, of Belleville, Ill.. Also surviving are her grandchildren Amanda, Carly, Rebekah, Hannah, Rachel, Benjamin, Emily, Lily and Shannon, and granddaughter-in-law Kristin Stedman; six great-grandchildren;  her brother-in-law Robert "Bob" Speaks; and dear close friends Kathy Dryden, Jan Stein, and Ely Gillespie.

Memorial donations may be made to the St. Clare Church Building Fund and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Visitation: The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, September 12, 2017 , at Wolfersberger Funeral Home.

Funeral: A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am, Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at St. Clare Catholic Church, 1411 Cross Street , Shiloh, Ill., with Rev. James Deiters presiding. A private family burial will be held at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Shiloh, Ill.
