IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Shirley R.
Hughey
September 3, 1924 – August 7, 2020
On August 7, 2020, Shirley Ruth Hughey (née Skinner), age 95, living in O'Fallon, Illinois, departed this world and went to be with the Lord. Shirley was living at Aspen Creek Memory Care Center in Troy, Illinois, at the time of her passing.
Shirley was born to Roy and Mona Skinner on September 3, 1924 in Lamar, Colorado, and moved to La Crescenta, California in 1937 as her family escaped the Dust Bowl of southern Colorado. Shirley attended LoneStar School in Lamar, Colorado, Clark Junior High School in La Crescenta, California, and in 1941 graduated from Glendale High School in Glendale, California.
Shirley began working at Security First National Bank and after 10 years as a bookkeeper/auditor Shirley moved on to the escrow business and worked for Verdugo Escrow, InterValley Escrow, and Tujunga Escrow. At the age of 59, when others are starting to think about retirement, Shirley started her own business, Hughey Escrow Company, in La Canada Flintridge, California. Hughey Escrow became a very successful company.
For many years Shirley enjoyed sewing. She became an expert seamstress and enjoyed sewing clothes, doll clothes, and many beautiful quilts. After Shirley retired from Hughey Escrow Company she sewed paint smocks, doll clothes, doll quilts, and other classroom items for Creation Corner Preschool at First Baptist Church of O'Fallon, Illinois.
Shirley also loved remodeling her home and never met a home project that was too large, small, or difficult to complete. She always enjoyed a good project and was always happiest when she was busy.
Soon after arriving in California, Shirley's neighbors, the Maroni's, invited the family to attend La Crescenta Assembly of God Church, which later was renamed Christian Life Church. This is where she dedicated her life to following God and served Him faithfully for the rest of her life. Shirley faithfully attended Christian Life Church in La Crescenta from 1938 until she moved to O'Fallon in 2018, 80 years of faithfully serving her Lord and Savior and the Christian Life Church family of believers.
Shirley's favorite saying is "Live right, believe in prayer, God changes things."
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Roy and Mona Skinner, husband Roy Hughey, sister Veatus Metsker and son-in-law Dallas Baxter.
She is survived by her sister Vera Weltmer, her daughters Wanda Hughey Baxter and Marilyn (Rick) Marshall, her grandchildren Ryan (Evan) Hargrove, Amber (Tim) Crafton, Matthew (Heather) Marshall, and Bethany (Isaac) Bouquet, and her great granddaughter Coraline Crafton.
Shirley will be returning back to her home state of California where she will be laid to rest after a graveside service for family at Glen Haven Mortuary.
