Sylvester "Syl" Anthony Sommer, age 91, of Wentzville, Mo., fortified with the sacraments of the Catholic Church, was granted eternal rest on February 20, 2022 at St. Joseph Hospital, in Lake St. Louis, Mo.
Syl was one of nine children, born June 6, 1930 in St. Paul, Mo. He served in the US Army from 1952-54 as an equipment maintenance engineer. He recently was selected for an Honor Flight to Washington DC., and was proud of his military service. He was a lifelong farmer in the Wellsville area. Syl enjoyed being with his family, dancing, socializing and walking about the neighborhood and traveling.
Syl was a past parishioner at Church of the Resurrection in Wellsville, where he had served on parish council and as a Communion minister. He continued to be active as a parishioner at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Wentzville until his passing. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus Council #10154 and the Wentzville American Legion Post #0323.
Sylvester married Ethel Wortmann on November 10, 1956 in Josephville, Mo. Together they built a successful farming operation and raised four children on the farm, teaching them the value of faith, family, work, and fun. They enjoyed traveling to all 50 states, Mexico, and Europe, where he had an audience with His Holiness, Pope John Paul II. He was saddened by Ethel's death on February 18, 2013. Syl and the Sommer family were blessed when he found and was united in marriage with Karon, nee Engelmeyer, Richter on April 25, 2015. He and Karon enjoyed 7 years of dancing and companionship until his death.
In addition to his wife Ethel, he was preceded in death by his parents Leo and Rose, nee Hakenewerth, Sommer; his sister Mary Rose Weber, and his brothers Lawrence, Norbert, Andrew, Wilbert, and Roman.
Surviving are his wife Karon Richter of Wentzville, Mo.; children Cheryl (Mike Lampe) Sommer of O'Fallon, Ill., Wayne Sommer of Wellsville, Mo, Joyce (Kent) Monnig of Glasgow, Mo., and Julie (Neal) Warden of Columbia, Mo., step-children Christine Richter of St. Charles, Mo., Louis N. (Tracey) Richter of Columbia, Mo., and Ann (Jeff) Hake of Defiance, Mo., grandchildren Joseph (Ariel) Lampe, Elizabeth (Aileen) Portugal, Nicholas Lampe, Nathan Lampe, and Marianne Lampe, Georgie Sommer, Grant Monnig, Jenna Monnig, and Joel (Annaliese) Monnig, Heather (Edward Stephens) Bartel, and Landon Bartel; bonus grandchildren Casey (Taylor) Schulte, Megan (Devin) Hires, Danielle Richter, Melissa Richter, Colby Schulte, Sophia Hake, Trevor Hake; great-grandchildren Kahlia, Savannah, Maeva, Elowyn, and Noah; and two sisters Bernice Gruen and Jeanette Wortmann.

A vigil service will begin at 4:30 pm, Friday, February 25, 2022 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 405 S. Church St., Wentzville, Mo, followed by visitation until 7:30 pm, at which time the Rosary will be recited. Visitation will continue at 10 am, Saturday, February 26, 2022 at the church.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am, Saturday, February 26, 2022 at the church, with Rev. Brian Fischer presiding. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
