Virgil D. Greene, age 82, of O'Fallon, born Sept. 20, 1926 O'Fallon, passed away unexpectedly Monday morning, December 29, 2008 at Rosewood Care Center in Swansea. Mr. Greene was a member at O'Fallon United Church of Christ; he had served on the Church Consistory and the UCC Illinois South Conference Board, and taught Sunday School for several years. As a member of the O'Fallon Homecoming Association, he served as Past President and designed and built many floats. Virgil was Past President of O'Fallon District 203 School Board that included the construction of the new high school. He was past District Governor for the Toastmasters and a member of the Belleville Area Holzschnitzers Woodcarvers Club. He was a member of Masonic Lodge AF & AM #576, O'Fallon, Ainad Shriners, Scottish Rite, lifetime member of O'Fallon Sportsmens Club and Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, IBEW and TKE. Mr. Greene worked as an electrical engineer and retired as general foreman from National Steel. He enjoyed bowling, woodworking, performing magic tricks, and was a true St. Louis Cardinals fan.

He was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Evelyn, nee Mantle, Greene, brother-in-law Lloyd Roe, and grandson Nicholas McCollum.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 61 years, Shirley, nee Korinek, Greene, of O'Fallon; children Barbara (Martin) Anderson of W. Dundee, Illinois; and Patricia McCollum of O'Fallon; his daughter from the Netherlands, Marjan (Harmjan Smid) Driessen & her children Haiko and Hylke; grandchildren, Christopher (Colleen) McCollum, Kristen (fiance Derrick Hilton) Anderson, Scott Anderson, Skyler Anderson; great-grandchildren Adam McCollum and Sam McCollum. He is also survived by sisters Joyce Zimmerman and Miriam Roe, aunt Ramah Batchelder; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Memorials in honor of Virgil Greene may be made to Shriners Hospital, Christian Homecare Services, Inc., or O'Fallon United Church of Christ Scholarship Fund and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Thursday, January 1, 2009 at Wolfersberger Funeral Home, 102 W. Washington Street, O'Fallon, Ill. A Masonic Service will be held at 6:30 p.m., Thursday.

Funeral: 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 2, 2009 at Wolfersberger Funeral Home, with Rev. Walter Gerth officiating. Burial will follow at Lake View Memorial Gardens, Fairview Heights, Ill. A luncheon will be served at O'Fallon UCC immediately following the burial.
