Age 83, of O'Fallon, Ill., born December 7, 1925 in East St. Louis, passed away November 25, 2009. Virgil worked at Shell Oil most of his life, first as an gauger and engineer, then as safety foreman, retiring in 1988. He also was a self-taught carpenter and made many of the wooden furnishings in his home. He also gave his woodwork as gifts to family, friends, and his church. Mr. Icide was an Air Force veteran, serving during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Lebanon Lion's Club for 30 years, where he had been awarded the Melvin Jones Award and the Nationwide Foundation Fellowship Award for his club service. He was a long-time member and former trustee of O'Fallon First United Methodist Church. He enjoyed vegetable gardening and was a devoted husband and father, who was loved and respected by his children..
He was preceded in death by his parents George and Nellie, nee O'Riley, Icide, son-in-law Dewey Petersen, sister Marie McConkey, and brothers Richard and George Icide, Jr.
He is survived by his wife Rosemary, nee Vunetich, Icide, whom he married May 22, 1948; daughter Robyn M. Petersen of Las Vegas, Nev., son Chris A. (Debby) Icide of Moss Beach, Calif., and daughter Amy (Lawrence) Murano of O'Fallon, Ill. Also surviving are grandson Stephen St. John; sisters-in-law Judy (James) Peters of Lebanon, Ill., and Jo Goodman of Springfield, Ill., and brother-in-law John Vunetich (Barbara) of Waterloo, Ill. and many nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or O'Fallon First United Methodist Church and will be accepted at the funeral home.
Visitation: Friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday, November 30, 2009 at Wolfersberger Funeral Home and from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at O'Fallon First United Methodist Church, 504 E. Highway 50, O'Fallon, Ill.
Funeral Service: 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at O'Fallon First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Ron Dickinson officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Lakeview Memorial Gardens, Fairview Heights, Ill.
