William "Bill" H. Shaffer, age 77, born August 27, 1940 in Shiloh, Ill., passed away January 4, 2018 at Barnes Jewish Hospital, St. Louis, Mo., after a brief illness.

Bill grew up in O'Fallon, and graduated from O'Fallon Township High School in 1958. He served in the US Army Reserves as a young man and worked at Wolfersberger Funeral Home in the early 60s with Lefty and Millie. He was the owner and jeweler at Causey's Jewelry and Gifts for over 40 years, until his initial retirement in 2001. He then worked for St. Clair County, Illinois, Public Building Commission retiring in 2013. Bill was a life member of Knights of Columbus Council 4239, and former member of the O'Fallon Chamber of Commerce - serving as President 1972-73, the Rotary Club and Kiwanis Club. He was known for being a friendly face about town, always putting others above himself and working hard to provide for his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph Raleigh Shaffer and Elizabeth, nee Droste, Shaffer; his son Stephen Maurice Shaffer; sister Joan Hemmer; brothers Robert "Bob" Shaffer and Richard "Dick" Shaffer, nephews Thomas G. Shaffer and Justin Shaffer; sister-in-law Lillian Shaffer; and brother-in-law Kurt Merckel.

Surviving are his daughter Barbara J. (John J. Albers) Shaffer of Lebanon, Ill., son Joseph W. Shaffer of O'Fallon; granddaughter Suzanne M. (Steven) Pohlman of Godfrey, Ill., grandson Benjamin W. Shaffer of Lebanon, Ill.; sisters Janet (Don) Schroeder of Boring, Ore., Ann Merckel of O'Fallon, Ill., and brother John Shaffer of Fairview Heights, Ill.; sister-in-law Judith (Joe) Matthews; and many dear nieces and nephews, and many wonderful friends.

Memorial donations  are suggested to Shriner's Hospital for Children.

Memorial Visitation: The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 5:00 pm, Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Wolfersberger Funeral Home, O'Fallon. No other funeral service will be held.
