Colonel Zachary George Hall was a true American hero. He was a curious academic, devout Christian, skilled aviator, recognized athlete, decorated officer, and impeccable gentleman. Most importantly, he was a devoted husband and father, beloved son and loyal brother. Zach had a fierce love for his family. He married the love of his life, Katie (nèe Borgert), in 2003 and together, they were raising four incredible, intelligent, and kind children. His charisma, energy, generosity, integrity, and loyalty are unmatched. To know Zach was to love him.

In his remarkable 44 years of life, he accomplished what most never will. A graduate of Grass Lake High School, Zach commissioned through the Air Force Academy before entering pilot training. Operationally, as a C-17 airdrop and evaluator pilot, Col. Hall amassed over 4,300 flying hours including over 160 combat sorties and more than 1,000 hours in Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Dawn, Odyssey Dawn, Inherent Resolve, and joint operations in the Horn of Africa, North Africa, and South America. Col. Hall participated in countless humanitarian operations, including POW/MIA repatriation operations for our fallen heroes. He was a T-1 instructor pilot, a C-17 aircraft commander, a flight commander, a wing executive officer, and a squadron commander. Most recently, Col. Hall served as the Chief of the Commander's Action Group, United States Transportation Command. Col. Hall earned four master's degrees and was a graduate of the Joint Advanced Warfighting School, the School of Advanced Air and Space Studies and the Air Force Institute of Technology. He was also a military fellow at the College of William and Mary. His service to the United States sent him, Katie and their children to assignments in Texas, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Washington, Ohio, Alabama, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Virginia, and Illinois.

As a lifelong learner, Zach embraced life with his relentless drive to succeed and improve himself as a man of principle. He was an uncompromising servant leader. He led with integrity always as he prioritized the needs of others well before his own. Zach authentically loved life as evidenced by his infectious smile. His brilliant sense of humor created contagious laughter as he cultivated a zest for life in those around him. His appreciation of nature combined with his adventurous spirit, optimistic outlook, insatiable curiosity, and courage to fail forward resulted in a variety of interests and hobbies that he passionately shared with others. His inspiring life was extinguished far too soon. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Zach was preceded in death by his beloved grandparents, George and Melba Dodson, Oneida Hall and his revered uncle, Randy Hall. He is survived by his wife, Katie, and their children: Sophia (16), Asher (15), Francesca (12), and Evangeline (11), his parents, Rod and Darcel Hall and Gene and Diana Borgert, his sisters: Elycia (Todd) Morris and Ashley (Ray) Brown, and his brother, Michael (Jeanne) Borgert and his incredible nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Friday, August 12, 2022 from 2-7 pm, at Sherwood Funeral Home, in Grass Lake, MI.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10 am, Tuesday, August 16, 2022, Hangar One, at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois.
